Day 2: Trying Premade Vegan Food

I'm learning that going vegan can be expensive. First of all, I can't remember the last time I've read the back of so many boxes of food, just to make sure the ingredients fell within vegan parameters. Also, I've been trying to make sure I'm not buying only snacks. That part is hard. I love food. I live to eat.

I ended up at Clark's, which is this specialty grocery store that is known for its quantity and variety of vegan and organic food. I got super excited that they had a small deli section with premade selections. Taking the guess work out of lunch was a huge bonus for me!

Imagine my horror when I saw the pricing that accompanies premade vegan food. $2.99 for barely a cup of potato salad? Are you kidding me? I can get a tub of the real shit at Stater Bros for that price! I bought a Thai-style tofu and veggie wrap too. That one made me cry a little.

Besides its pricing... (I think it was in the $7 range.) It was sad to the palate. I mean the crunchy vegetables and the tofu were fine. Dry as Laughlin in the summer, but fine... It was the fucking peanut butter sauce that clung to the side of the damn thing that made my eyes water. Dude. I'm Asian. I love tofu. I love sprouts and carrots and cabbage and onions and all of that. But WHAT IN ALL HOLY HELL IS PEANUT BUTTER DOING IN THIS WRAP?!? I get peanut sauce. I get peanuts in Asian food. But spreading Jiffy and adding sriracha to a tortilla doesn't make it Thai style. Ok????

Luckily, the chocolate muffins are saving the day... For a vegan dessert, it's pretty good. Nice and (ugh I hate this word) moist, all ingredients considered. God I hope the rest of the expensive and minimal shopping cart I loaded into the back of my car does me some justice. Otherwise, it's gonna be long and despairing road ahead. Sweet Lord. 88 days to go...
